Historic Map - Mohawk, NY - 1893
Description
This reproduction bird's-eye view map of Mohawk, New York was published by Burleigh Litho. Co. in 1893. The village of Mohawk emerged from the Burnetsfield Patent; land granted to Palatine Germans by Queen Anne of England. It is said that George Washington would stop for lunch at the local Shoemaker Tavern during his trips to Fort Stanwix in Rome, New York.
The village on the south bank of the Mohawk River prospered with the addition of the Erie Canal and was incorporated in 1844. Mohawk produced textile goods and malt throughout the 1800s. Broomhall's Malt House was 65 by 180 feet and three stories tall, using around 40,000 bushels of grain annually.
Varley Hall was built in 1860. The brick building measured 43 by 123 feet with a stage of 43 by 25 feet. Dramatic exhibitions were presented here in an ornate setting that could seat up to 1,000 people.
This panoramic map from 1893 shows Mohawks buildings, bridges, railroad routes and clearly labeled streets.
