This aero-view map of Abingdon, Illinois was drawn by D. D. Morse and published by Chas. Shober in 1874. Abingdon was established in the 1820's along the planned Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad.
Abingdon was mainly an agricultural community known for fine corn and valued pork.
Abingdon College was founded in Abingdon in the 1850's by followers of the Christian faith. Nearby, a female college and Seminary were instilled by members of the Methodist faith. This institution became known as Hedding College in 1875, and remained an asset to Abingdon for fifty years before moving and merging with Wesleyan University.
