Historic Map - Allentown, PA - 1922
Description
This reproduction view of Allentown, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by Hughes & Fowler in 1922. Allentown was formed along the Lehigh River by merchant and landowner William Allen as a trade center in the mid-1700's. During the 1800's, with its proximity to the anthracite coal fields and the valuable cement and slate industries of the Lehigh Valley, Allentown prospered greatly as the transportation hub between Philadelphia and New York. The Lehigh Valley Railroad with its contributory lines carried products to cities in the south and southeast while the Lehigh & Susquehanna Division of the New Jersey Central Railroad was transporting to the east and west. Allentown’s ability to garner raw materials enabled several manufacturers and mechanical industries to begin business in Allentown including boot and shoe factories, clockmakers, bottlers, brick and tile works, carpet manufacturing, furniture factories, clothing makers, hosiery mills, knitting mills and silk goods of all sorts. Often called the Convention City, Allentown has always embraced business and trade.
The image from 1922 includes Allentown streets, buildings and railroad lines. The Lehigh River is depicted along with River Front Park in the foreground while airplanes are shown aloft in the distance.
