Historic Map - Altamont, NY - 1890
Description
Reproduction panorama map of Altamont, New York drawn and published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1890. Formerly a Dutch settlement called "Hellerburgh", Altamont was also known as "Knowersville" in the early 1800's. Located within the town of Guilderland and called Altamont, it was a summer retreat for many New Englanders in 1890. The Albany and Susquehanna Railroad line brought visitors to enjoy the village's hotels and lakeside boarding houses. Lying just below the Helderberg Mountains, with splendid views and visitor's services, Altamont prospered. The map exclaims: "From the Kushaqua there is a fine view of the Adirondack, Green and White mountains and Berkshire Hills, also the cities of Albany, Troy, Schenectady and Saratoga. The hills in the background of this view are dotted with fine and costly summer cottages of some of the leading citizens of Albany. There is a fine sulphur spring not far from the Kushaqua Hotel. There are ten trains each way daily."
This map captures the town as it appeared the year it was incorporated. The map from 1890 features an illustration of the Kushaqua Hotel and includes clearly labeled street names showing railroad traffic.
