Historic Map - Alton, NH - 1888
Description
This bird’s-eye view print of Alton, New Hampshire was drawn and published by George E. Norris, Burleigh Lith. in 1888. Alton lies at the end of Alton Bay off Lake Winnipesaukee near the Belknap Mountains.
A farming village in its early years, Alton began attracting industry in the 1840's. It was then reached by the Cochecho Railroad, which later was absorbed into the Boston & Maine Railway system. Alton maintained grist and saw mills in that era, as well as a number of boot and shoe factories.
Alton Bay and the lake were popular summer vacation destinations during the late 1800's. A scenic campground at Alton Bay was operated by the Adventist church. Regular summer camp offerings of meetings and lectures were well attended.
The illustration includes labeled roads, buildings, waterways and railroad route. There are color illustrations of Alton Bay and the South End of Main St.
