Description

Asbury Park, Ocean Grove and vicinity, New Jersey 1897.

This reproduction panoramic view of Asbury Park, Ocean Grove and vicinity in New Jersey was published by Landis & Hughes in 1897. Asbury Park, the Atlantic beach resort community in Monmouth County, was developed in 1871 by New York manufacturer James A. Bradley. Bradley built the boardwalk with a pier at the end and an orchestra pavilion. In 1888, the Palace Merry-Go-Round was built on the corner of Lake Avenue and Kingsley Street by Ernest Schnitzler. The seaside villages were serviced by the New York and Long Branch Railroad and quickly attracted vacationers from all over. Several luxury hotels lined the mile and a quarter long beachfront. The region offered excellent swimming, boating and fishing during the day and lively clubs and amusements in the evening.

This detailed map from 1897 shows Asbury Park's buildings, railroad route, clearly labeled streets and beaches.
