Historic Map - Aurora, MO - 1891
Description
Reproduction map of the town known as Aurora, MO, drawn by Thaddeus Fowler in 1891. The map features the newly completed City Hall, built in 1891 which stood until destroyed by fire in 1913.
European settlers did not settle this area of the Ozarks until 1834, when land along Honey Creek was settled by James D. Hillhouse, E.B. Hillhouse, A. A. Young, James Barrow and James Gibson. The McNatt, Liles and Rinker families were also early settlers. The first house built in the town was built by Joseph Rinker around 1840. The house was built in the area now occupied by the Aurora Community Hospital. A well being dug on the farm of Thomas D. Liles in November, 1885, led to the discovery of a large deposit of galena ore, marking the beginning of Aurora as a mining town, which it remained for the next 100 years.
