Historic Map - Ayer, MA - 1886
Description
This panoramic print of Ayer, Massachusetts was drawn and published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1886. Ayer was primarily a farming community until the 1840's when it became an important railroad junction point. Early railroads such as the Fitchburg, the Peterborough & Shirley, the Worcester & Nashua and the Stony Brook all crossed rails at Ayer.
During the American Civil War a training camp for Union army troops was established just outside of town.
Ayer was incorporated in 1871 and prospered in the late 1800's with its fine furniture makers and with the railroad transportation industry.
The illustration includes labeled streets, buildings, waterways and railroad routes.
