Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Bainbridge, New York, drawn and published by Lucien R. Burleigh around 1889. Bainbridge, in New York's Chenango County, was settled by refugees that were displaced by the colonial war called "Vermont Sufferers". Once colonial troops cleared the area of any hostile natives in 1779, the "Vermont Sufferers" were allowed to settle. A town was formed in Tioga County called "Jericho" along the Susquehanna River in 1791. In 1814, the name was changed to Bainbridge in honor of U. S. Navy Commodore William Bainbridge, in the newly formed Chenango County. The land of this valley was found to be rich with fine fertile clay loam and alluvium and perfect for dairy farming.
The map from around 1889 features clearly labeled street names showing railroad traffic.
