Description

View of Bar Harbor, Mt. Desert Island, Maine, 1886 / published by G. W. Morris.

Originally incorporated as “Eden” in 1796, the maritime harbor supported lumber, fishing and shipbuilding. Although not officially renamed Bar Harbor until 1918, the town on the northeast shore of Mount Desert Island became synonymous with the name of the harbor that served it, Bar Harbor.

The scenic beauty surrounding the area attracted artists from the American Luminism Movement and Hudson River School in the mid-1800's and several grand hotels were built to accommodate the increasing number of tourists to the area. Fashionable mansions and summer homes began to be built, many of which were destroyed by fire in 1947. Several summer homes survived the fire along with the business district and Mount Desert Street, which is now listed with the National Register of Historic Places.

Still a popular destination, this map of Bar Harbor captures the community from a distance.

The following excerpt from the Daily Kennebec Journal, (Augusta, ME), dated August 19, 1886 illustrates the increasing property values in the region:

“The annual boom in real estate around Mount Desert has begun and there appears to be a good many buyers. A piece of land bought last March for $600 sold this week for $1500. An acre of land some distance from Bar Harbor was bought two years ago for $100 and sold last week for $2,500. Sales have been made at $15,000 per acre of land, and building lots command fabulous prices. About all the desirable land around Mount Desert has been bought up and buyers are now looking for cottage lots on the main land in this vicinity. Hancock Point is growing rapidly, and cottages are going up around Mount Desert Ferry, where is located the new and palatial hotel called “The Bluffs”. This hotel stands on a high elevation, with the grounds about it charmingly laid out and ornamented. Excursion trips thither from Bar Harbor are now very popular. Point Harbor, just across the bay, now called “Sorrento”, is attracting attention. It is an excellent locality for the overflow of Bar Harbor, and during the past week several lots have been sold there.”
