Bird's-eye view map of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, drawn by Albert Ruger and published by Chicago Lithographing Co. in 1867, reprint. At the time of American settlement, around 1840, the area around Beaver Dam was known as Okwanim, a Chippewa Indian word for "beaver dam". The county seat of Dodge County, the city of Beaver Dam was incorporated on March 18, 1856, just eleven years before this map was published. The Milwaukee Railroad also arrived in 1856.
