Historic Map - Berkeley Springs (Bath), WV - 1889
Description
This panoramic view of Berkeley Springs (Bath), West Virginia was drawn by John Moray and published by A. Hoen & Co. in 1889. The reproduction image views the celebrated and fashionable health resort from Warm Spring Mountain. George Washington was one of the original surveyors of this Appalachian Mountain area and would visit often with his ailing half-brother, Lawrence. The areas spring water was rumored to hail healthy medicinal benefits. The town is officially called Bath, but is commonly referred to as Berkeley Springs, from the local springs named for Colonial Governor of Virginia Sir William Berkeley. Four years before this maps publishing, work began on the hillside retreat called the Samuel Taylor Suit Cottage known as Berkeley Castle. The late Victorian castle of fifteen rooms featured a 50 foot by 40 foot ballroom. The building was completed in the early 1890s and still stands today.
The map from 1889 includes Bath streets, buildings and railroad line. It features inset illustrations of the following:
Berkley Spring Hotel. Capacity 500 Guests.
Mount Wesley School.
Pagoda Springs.
Swimming Pools & Baths.
Principal Spring.
Court House.
B. S. & P. R. R. Depot.
