Historic Map - Berlin, WI - 1867
Description
Bird's eye view of the city of Berlin, Green Lake Co., Wisconsin 1867. Drawn by A. Ruger.
Bird's-eye view map of Berlin, Wisconsin, drawn by Albert Ruger and published by Chicago Lithographing Co. in 1867, reprint. Located in Waushara County, the city of Berlin is in a region long occupied by Native Americans, with an ancient Indian road that stretched from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico, with only a short land passage at present day Portage to interrupt it. French fur-traders were attracted to the abundant wildlife and the Fox-Wisconsin river route in the area. French agent Nicholas Perrot filed the first European land claim in 1686, which included all of the land west of the Great Lakes as French Territory.
The French and Indian War of the 1700s resulted in British control of the territory. The land reverted to Indian ownership after the American Revolutionary War, but was ceded to the United States in the late 1830's. Small villages and farming communities began to form in the 1840's. This map captures the town of Berlin as it appeared before the arrival of railroads.
Charming inset illustrations of the West Side Public School and the High School are featured on the map.
