View of Bernville, Berks County, P.A., 1898 / drawn & published by Bailey & Moyer.

This reproduction panoramic view of Bernville, Pennsylvania was drawn and published by Bailey & Moyer in 1898. Bernville was established in the early 1800s along Northkill Creek. It remained a quiet farming community until the Union Canal was completed in 1828 connecting the Susquehanna and Schuykill Rivers. With the canal’s addition, Bernville became an important port town. The busy canal was in constant use for thirty years, ending with the addition of the Lebanon Valley Railroad. Early industries of Bernville included tanneries, foundries, weavers, hatters and chair makers. A popular creamery system was begun in Bernville by Jonathan B. Miller in 1889. The two covered bridges across Northkill Creek depicted in this image connected Bernville with Jefferson Township. The bridge at 3rd Street was built in 1848 and the south bridge was built in 1849. Neither bridge exists today.

The image from 1898 includes Bernville’s clearly labeled streets, buildings and covered bridges.
