Historic Map - Bessemer, MI - 1886
Description
This panoramic print of Bessemer, Michigan was drawn and published by Norris, Wellge & Co., Beck & Pauli Lith. in 1886. Bessemer was established near Lake Superior, in the late 1800's, to supply and house the workers of the copper mines that operated throughout the surrounding hills at that time.
The Gogebic Mountains provided much copper and harvested timber during the 1800's. Bessemer offered a number of leisure opportunities for miners, as well as a variety of general mining supply products for sale.
Bessemer could be reached by way of the Milwaukee Lake Shore & Western Railroad.
The map shows area mines, roads, buildings and railroad routes. It features inset views of Lead Street and Sophie Street, as well as area lumbering and mining interests.
