Description

View of Beverly, Essex County, M.A., 1886 / drawn & published by Greenough & Co.

This panoramic print of Beverly, Massachusetts was drawn and published by W. A. Greenough & Co. in 1886. Beverly was settled by Europeans in the 1620's just north of Boston. Timber harvesting and farming were performed throughout the region. Hay, rye, oats, barley, corn and potatoes were grown abundantly.

A large cotton mill built in 1787 at Beverly is said to be America’s first cotton mill.

In the late 1800's, Beverly was a popular get-a-way destination for vacationers. Its scenic coastline prompted many to build country manors and cottages during that time.

The map includes labeled streets, bridges, buildings, port area and railroad routes.
