Historic Map - Blue Hill, ME - 1896
Description
First settled in 1762 as part of a Massachusetts land grant to a selected group who served in the French Indian War, the settlement was called Newport Plantation when Captain Joseph Wood and John Roundy from Andover, Massachusetts built the first homes on Mill Island. The town was officially incorporated as Blue Hill in 1789.
The abundant water power from ponds in the region allowed the development of mills. Lumber was used for masts and shipbuilding, which was a very important enterprise in Blue Hill.
The granite found around Blue Hill was found to be of a high quality, some of the Blue Hill granite was used to build the Brooklyn Bridge.
A brief article in the “Bangor Daily Whig and Courier”, dated May 9, 1896, the same year that this map was published, illustrates the importance of the quarries to the local economy:
“The Blue Hill Granite Company have quite a number of orders ahead for stock and are giving employment to thirty quarrymen. They are about to erect a new twenty-ton derrick and a new thirty-house power engine. These additions will give them an equipment of two engines of thirty-horse power and one of fifty-horse power. The Chase Granite Company at Blue Hill are now giving employment to about one hundred cutters. This concern is shipping large quantities of granite to Boston.”
An inset illustration of “The Quarries” is featured in the lower right corner of the image, and an illustration of the Town Hall appears in the title cartouche.
