Historic Map - Boston, MA - 1899
Description
This bird’s-eye view print of Boston and vicinity was drawn by Albert E. Downs and published by Geo. H. Walker & Co. in 1899. In the years of its great expansion, Boston area waterways and mudflats were filled in, hills leveled and islands connected, in the effort to accommodate future growth. Neighboring Roxbury township was annexed by Boston in 1868 and Dorchester became attached in 1870. Roslindale was annexed in 1873 and Brighton and Charlestown became part of the city in 1874. The Back Bay area of a former bay was totally filled in by 1900.
The Beaux-Arts Boston Public Library building was completed in 1892 across the street from the Old South Church.
The city’s South Station was built in 1899.
The illustration indicates shipping activities throughout Boston’s waterways. Shown are labeled streets, bridges, wharves, buildings and railroad routes.
