Historic Map - Brewster, NY - 1887
Description
Reproduction bird's-eye view of Brewster, New York, created and published by Burleigh Litho. in 1887. Brewster, located in Putnam County, was named after two of its early landowners Walter and James Brewster. Walter built the first home in the area in 1850. The Harlem Railroad had extended their mileage to reach Brewster in the following year. The area was used mainly for grain farming. In 1853, Gail Borden of nearby Wassaic, invented a method of preserving milk without refrigeration. He started a factory there and when the American Civil War seemed inevitable, built a second factory in Brewster. The condensed milk was widely used during the war. Gail's son, John Gail Borden, was named president of the newly founded National Bank in Brewster in 1875. In 1882 Brewster's town hall burned down; and was soon replaced by the Southwest Town Hall.
The map from 1887 includes clearly labeled street names showing railroad routes.
