Historic Map - Bridgton, ME - 1888
Description
Bridgton, Maine was named after Moody Bridges when it was organized as Bridgton Plantation in 1779. The Massachusetts General Court granted the land to Moody Bridges as proprietor, along with Benjamin Milliken and Thomas Perley in 1768.
Industries grew as water power was provided by Stephens Brook for 12 mill sites. The Bridgton and Saco River Railroad opened in 1883, allowing tourists to discover the area that is still sought after for its scenic beauty and recreational opportunities.
Two inset illustrations appear in the lower corners of the image, one of the railroad depot and one appears to be the Main Street business district.
