Historic Map - Brownsville, PA - 1902
Description
View of Brownsville, Fayette and Washington Counties, P.A., 1926 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.
The reproduction panoramic view of Brownsville, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1902. Brownsville was established in 1785 along the higher banks of the Monongahela River. Just across the river the lower banks were established as West Brownsville. The two portions of town were located in separate counties, but connected by bridge since early on. The town of Bridgeport was established just south along the river from Brownsville and the three towns of Brownsville, Bridgeport and West Brownsville came to be known as the “Three Towns” as they were so closely connected and maintained the same industrial interests. Important industries of the Three Towns included glassmaking, papermaking, cabinet and chair making, and shoemaking.
The Daniel French Company started a company that manufactured cotton and woolen yarns and a successful shipbuilding firm. Bridgeport’s famous Hamburger Distillery, Limited was well known for its “Old Bridgeport Pure Rye” and “Bridgeport Pure Malt”, until its owner, Ph. Hamburger, sold and retired from the business in 1901. The esteemed Brownsville Brewery was organized and broke ground in Bridgeport the year following this map’s publishing.
The map from 1902 includes Brownsville and West Brownsville, iron bridge, clearly labeled streets, buildings, steamboat traffic and railroad lines.
