Historic Map - Buckhannon, WV - 1900
Description
This reproduction panoramic view of Buckhannon, West Virginia was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1900. The first post office for the community of Buckhannon was established in 1804 with John Jackson as acting postmaster. Buckhannon, located in the foothills of the Allegheny Mountains on the Buckhannon River, was officially founded in 1816 and chartered in 1852. The county court house was built in 1854. The building was being replaced at the time of this map���s publishing by the Classical Revival style building that still stands today. West Virginia Wesleyan College was founded in Buckhannon in 1890 by the West Virginia Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. At the time of this map���s publishing the college was referred to as West Virginia Conference Seminary.
The map from 1900 includes clearly labeled street names and railroad lines.
