Description

The city of Buffalo, N.Y. 1880. Maerz Lithographing Co.

Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Buffalo, New York, drawn and published by Edward Howard Hutchinson in 1880. Buffalo, located on the eastern shores of Lake Erie near the head of the Niagara River, began as a small trading community. When the Erie Canal opened in 1825, Buffalo was at its western terminus, enabling Buffalo to grow with commercial shipping as well as passenger boats. In 1843, the world's first steam-powered grain elevator was constructed at Buffalo's port, making it faster to load and unload grain shipments. Abraham Lincoln stayed at the American Hotel on Main Street when he visited in 1861. Two years after the map's publishing Grover Cleveland would become Buffalo's mayor.

The map from 1880 includes clearly labeled street names showing railroad routes and waterway traffic.
