This bird’s-eye view print of Canon City, Colorado was drawn by J. J. Stoner and published by Beck & Pauli Lithographing Co. in 1882. Canon City developed during the gold and silver mining days of Colorado. Canon City was an important processing and transportation center for the various ore mined throughout the region.
In 1861, when Fremont County was established, Canon City was named its seat of government. The early community was served by the narrow-gauge Denver & Rio Grande Railroad.
The map includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad routes. The map indicates Canon City’s population at 3,000 and its elevation at 5,376 feet above sea level in 1882. There are featured inset illustrations of Main St. River St. and the Colorado Collegiate and Military Institute.
