Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Canton, New York, drawn by Lucien R. Burleigh and published by C. H. Vogt & Son in 1885. Canton was settled early in the 1800's and quickly grew as a lumber and farming community specializing in dairy products. Several factories began the manufacture of farm implements in Canton. In 1873 W. B. Barlow established his firm making threshers and wheels. In 1874 J. H. Rushton began his boat factory and expanded it in 1883. The St. Lawrence University was founded in Canton in 1856.
