Historic Map - Chicago, IL - 1892 - Peter Roy.
Description
This print of Chicago, Illinois was drawn and published by Peter Roy in 1892. The great World’s Columbian Exposition was Chicago’s 1893 boost towards prosperity. Tailored to celebrate Christopher Columbus’ arrival to the “new world”, the exhibition promised and delivered a new age to Chicagoans with its overall design and international interest.
The city’s new ten-story steel-framed Rand McNally Building on Adams St. became the fair’s headquarters. From here designers Daniel Burnham and Frederick Law Olmsted planned the Beaux-Arts based fairgrounds using French neoclassical architecture to create the illusion of European grandeur.
Visited by millions, the exposition was a successful and memorable event for Chicago.
The map produced in 1892 includes streets, buildings, bridges and waterways. It portrays port activity and railroad routes. Featured is an inset illustration of View of Chicago in 1832.
