Historic Map - Chicopee, MA - 1878
Description
View of Chicopee, Hampden County, M.A., 1878 / drawn & published by D. Bremner & Co.
This bird’s-eye view print of Chicopee, Massachusetts was drawn and published by D. Bremner & Co. Lith. in 1878. Chicopee was settled by Europeans in the 1630's along the Connecticut River, near where the Chicopee River flows into it.
The Chicopee River provided ample water-power for the many manufacturing interests that emerged at Chicopee during the 1800's. Textiles of all sorts were manufactured in Chicopee during that era, as well as iron and brass products. The Ames Manufacturing Company was a large producer of swords and cannons. The Crescent-Davis Company specialized in the production of double-barrel shotguns. Other industries of Chicopee included paper and leather making, boot and shoe making and ship building.
A new Byzantine-style city hall building, housing a library, city offices and a police department, was dedicated in December of 1871 at Market Square.
The map shows buildings, bridges, labeled streets and railroad routes.
