Description

View of Clarion, Clarion County, P.A., 1896 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This reproduction view of Clarion, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1896. The village of Clarion was incorporated as a borough in 1841. Oil and natural gas were discovered near Clarion in the 1880's and for a time the community benefited from its extraction.

The Clarion Academy has been a fixture here since 1840 and the Clarion Female Seminary began in 1843. In 1871 the new three-story brick academy building opened under the name of Carrier Seminary. The Carrier family had been contributors to the institution which stood on ten acres of campus grounds. Leading citizens of Clarion, teachers and stockholders succeeded in 1886 in altering the schools Methodist Episcopal control and formed the State Normal School. The main school structure was completely renovated with the third story being converted into a grand hall. The added ladies dormitory consisted of two three-story wings, the first story containing a great dining room that seated 250. The boys dormitory, also three-stories high, consisted of seventy rooms. The school gave instruction in sciences, music, painting and modern languages and featured courses in teaching and civil engineering.

The panoramic map from 1896 shows Clarion streets, buildings, oil wells and railroad route. It shows Clarion River and State Normal School in the distance.
