Description

Cooperstown, N.Y. Burleigh Lithographing Establishment.

Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Cooperstown, New York, published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1890. Cooperstown was founded by Judge William Cooper, who purchased the land in 1785. Cooper platted the properties including the village and sold all the plots within 16 days. Life in the area was unrewarding at first because it was mostly wilderness with no roads or bridges. Cooper persuaded settlers at convenient times to build local roads and bridges and established a harvest storage facility for the winter preservation of citizen's valuable supplies. Judge Cooper's son author James Fenimore Cooper also came to Cooperstown to live and work, featuring Cooperstown as a backdrop for many of his novels.

This map from 1890 includes buildings, clearly labeled street names and railroad lines.
