Description

View of Corry, Erie County, P.A., 1870 / drawn & published by Ruger & Stoner.

This bird’s-eye view print of Corry, Pennsylvania was drawn by A. Ruger and published by Ruger & Stoner in 1870. Corry began as a railroad junction town when in 1861 the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad crossed over the Sunbury and Erie Railroad on land owned by the town’s namesake Hiram Cory. Corry prospered with Pennsylvania’s oil boom of the late 1800's. Transportation of the valuable resource was a key factor in Corry’s early economy. Lumber was also an important early industry to the community. Corry was deemed a borough in 1863 and earned city status four years before this map’s publishing.

The panoramic map from 1870 shows Corry’s labeled streets, buildings and railroad lines. It depicts pedestrian and carriage traffic and features the following inset illustrations:

• Hatch School.
