Description

View of Corry, Erie County, P.A., 1895 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer.

This panoramic print of Corry, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1895. Corry started as a railroad junction town when in 1861 the Atlantic and Great Western Railroad crossed over the Sunbury and Erie Railroad on land owned by the town’s namesake Hiram Cory.

The town that emerged at the crossroads had little to offer until Samuel Downer built a refinery here near the Pennsylvania oil fields and accessible to railroad transportation. Downer Oil Company was established and the following year the Downer & Kent Oil Works was erected. Corry prospered as railroads passed through from the valuable oil regions toward markets in all directions.

Its proximity to the oil and bituminous coal fields brought many manufacturers to Corry including the Corry Novelty Company in 1870 and the Ajax Iron Works in 1877. The Ajax Works was severely damaged by fire in the year of this map’s publishing. The Corry Radiator Works began supplying power to other local manufactures in 1892. Corry’s mayor in 1895 was R. N. Seavor. In that year the Corry Hospital Association and a Board of Trade were organized.

The detailed map from 1895 shows Corry’s labeled streets, buildings and railroad lines.
