Description

View of Dalton, Berkshire County, M.A., 1884 / drawn & published by L. R. Burleigh.

This panoramic print of Dalton, Massachusetts was drawn and published by Lucien R. Burleigh, Beck & Pauli Lith. in 1884. Dalton was settled in the 1750's near a branch of the Housatonic River. Farming was important to Dalton’s early economy until the early 1800's, when paper and textile mills emerged along the river at that location.

Crane & Company began producing bank note paper in the 1840's, and in 1873 it began its long run as the sole provider of paper used in the making of United States paper currency.

Dalton is now considered part of the Pittsfield Metropolitan Area.

The map indicates buildings, labeled roads and railroad route. It features an inset illustration of the textile mills along Housatonic Avenue.
