Historic Map - Davenport, IA - 1875
Description
This panoramic print of Davenport, Iowa was drawn by Alfred Theodore Andreas and published by Andreas Atlas Co. in 1875. Davenport competed for, and became, county seat of government for Scott County when it was created in the 1830's.
Ambrose Fulton moved to Davenport in 1842 where he built the first flat-bottom boat for transportation of grain to interests in New Orleans. Davenport’s first steam-powered flouring mill was built by Mr. Fulton in 1848 and in 1854 he was elected state senator of District 16. Fulton was a major influence on Davenport’s early days, building buildings and promoting the town.
The community maintained as a riverboat port until the Rock Island Railroad erected a railway bridge at that point across the Mississippi River, connecting Davenport with Rock Island, Illinois. With the railroad’s arrival, Davenport developed into a grain shipping center where some of the largest elevators in Iowa were constructed. Some grain was processed in Davenport, but trainloads of wheat, corn, oats and barley were shipped to mills beyond.
The map includes bridge, buildings and railroad routes. Riverboat and barge activity is displayed in the foreground with featured steamers “Davenport” and “Rock Island”.
