Davis, Tucker County, West Virginia 1898. Drawn by T. M. Fowler.

The reproduction view of Davis, West Virginia was drawn and published by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler in 1898. The town of Davis, located in West Virginia��s Canaan Valley on the Blackwater River, was named for industrialist and U. S. Senator Henry Gassaway Davis. The community is shown during its logging phase. During this period, so much timber was removed from the valley and surrounding hills that the remaining organic ground cover dried to the point of combustion and the entire region smoldered and burned for months. Davis was saved from the fire��s advancing flames with the use of deep trenches encircling the town, which were filled with the river��s water.

The map from 1898 includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad lines. It features an inset illustration of Blackwater Falls.
