Description

Dayton, Ohio 1870.

Panoramic map reproduction of Dayton, Ohio drawn by A. Ruger and published by Merchants Lithographing Co. in 1870. Dayton was founded in 1796 in Ohio's Miami Valley and incorporated as a city in 1805. Dayton was named after Jonathan Dayton who had been an American Revolutionary War hero, a signer of the Constitution and owner of the land used. The opening of the Miami and Erie Canal, linked Dayton with Cincinnati, and the community prospered as a major transportation hub and by the mid-1800s was considered one of the wealthiest cities in the state. The year that this map was published, the Fifteenth Amendment was added to the Constitution giving African-American men the right to vote. The amendment in Ohio, was passed by just one vote. At the time of this map Wilbur Wright was a toddler in Dayton and Orville was born the next year.
