Description

View of Denver, Denver County, C.O., 1889 / drawn & published by H. Wellge.

This perspective print of Denver, Colorado was drawn by Henry Wellge and published by American Publishing Co. in 1889. Denver was established at the confluence of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River during the Pike’s Peak Gold Rush era of the late 1850's.

When the Colorado Territory was formed in 1861, Denver was named the county seat of Arapahoe County. Later, when Colorado became a state, Denver was named its capital.

Denver was a recognized supply town for the mining interests of the region, as well as a processing and transportation center for the ore. Denver was considered a rowdy haven for gold and silver seekers as well as undesirables ready to take advantage of them.

The town, located in the eastern foothills of the Rocky Mountains, installed a horse-drawn railway system through town in 1872. Denver’s telephone exchange service began in 1879. The ornate Tabor Opera House building was completed in 1881 to much fanfare.

Denver’s Union Stockyards were designated in 1886 and that same year, construction of the state capital building began.

The map includes labeled streets, bridges, buildings and railroad routes. The state capital building sits in the foreground. The caption indicates that “the city has 85 churches, 13 banks, 19 railroads and 44 newspapers”. There are inset illustrations of the following:
