Description
An aerial view of Derby & Shelton, CT, in 1898. Settled in 1642 as an Indian trading post, Derby was named for the English town of Derby in 1675. The town of Shelton began as a manufacturing village in the 1860s named for the Shelton Company founded by Edward N. Shelton. Edward N. Shelton (1812-1894) was founder of Ousatonic Water Power Company and organized the building of a dam on the Housatonic River to supply power. In recent years, many of the historic buildings along Howe Avenue have been restored along with two 19th Century factory buildings on Bridge Street as part of community's revitalization effort.
An extensive business directory appears in the left margin of the map (see list below). It is interesting to note an early telephone listing in the business directory. The only reference to a telephone in the directory lists two, 3-digit telephone numbers for the Derby and Shelton locations of the Harris Express Company.
