Historic Map - Devon, England - World War II - Operation Overlord - 1944
Description
The Normandy Invasion is undoubtedly one of the most widely known battles of World War II. Code named Operation Overlord, the Battle of Normandy began on June 6th, 1944, with the initial landings (code named Operation Neptune - now known as D-Day). This massive invasion of Northern France was a cornerstone of the war, and dealt a major blow to Nazi Germany.
Involving US, Canadian, British and Free French Forces, the assault was the largest amphibious invasion the world had ever seen. Also involving glider landings, arial and naval bombardments, and parachute drops behind enemy lines, the Normandy Landings became the first succesful landing across the English Channel in over 800 years.
