Historic Map - Dolgeville, NY - 1890
Description
Reproduction panoramic map of Dolgeville, New York, drawn by Alfred Dolge and published by Burleigh Litho. Co. in 1890. Dolgeville is a village in Herkimer County named for industrialist Alfred Dolge. The area's early settlement had concerned itself with lumber and milling. When Dolge arrived in 1874 the village was known as "Brockett's Bridge". Alfred Dolge had been apprentice to his father's piano manufacturing company, A. Dolge & Co. At Brockett's Bridge he purchased the town's old tannery and established the Dolge Company Factory Complex. The factories produced felt shoes, autoharps, piano cases, piano sounding boards and piano hammers. Dolge built a railroad, ran lumber yards and was a major contributor to the local economy. In 1887, the village changed its name to Dolgeville. This map captures Dolgeville one year before electricity reached the village.
This bird's-eye view map from 1890 includes buildings, clearly labeled street names and railroad lines. It is very rare to find a map such as this that was drawn by a resident of the town. It features an inset illustration of Dolgeville High Falls and numbered references to the following places:
1. Academy
2. Public School.
