This bird’s-eye view print of Dover, New Hampshire was drawn and published by A. F. Poole, Interstate Art Publishing Co. in 1888. Dover was settled in the 1600's in the state’s coastal region. When Strafford County was organized in 1771, Dover was named its county seat of government.
The area’s fast-moving waterways enabled Dover to become a manufacturing center in the 1800's. The Cocheco Manufacturing Company, located downtown near the falls of the Cochecho River, was a major producer of cotton goods. The company maintained a complex of large brick mill buildings that were linked by railroad.
The community of Dover was served by the Boston & Maine, and Dover & Portsmouth railroads.
The map, shown from Garrison Hill, includes labeled streets, bridges, buildings and railroad routes.
