Historic Map - Elizabeth & West Elizabeth, PA - 1897
Description
This panoramic print of Elizabeth and West Elizabeth, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1897. Elizabeth was established in the late 1700's along the Monongahela River. It remained a farming community until coal in great abundance was discovered throughout the valley. West Elizabeth was established just across the river in 1833. The gentle sloping of the West Elizabeth accommodated several coal inclines that enabled the valuable fuel source to be transported from the mines to the river easily and barged by river to Pittsburgh and points beyond. The two towns prospered during this era building boats, steamships and barges.
The map from 1897 includes river traffic, labeled streets, buildings and railroad routes.
