Beginning as a lumber and farming community, Ellenville experienced a boom when the Delaware & Hudson Canal was built in the 1820s. The town prospered as a canal town and manufacturing center, particularly with the making of pottery and glass. The Ulster Knife Company was founded in Ellenville in the 1870's and is referenced on the map.
