Historic Map - Ford City, PA - 1896
Description
This birds-eye view print of Ford City, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & James B. Moyer in 1896. Ford City was established in the 1880's on level ground next to the Allegheny River by Captain John Ford who had designs of building a plate glass factory there. Captain Ford built his factory, leased it to the Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company and created housing and services within the town. The company employed thousands, leased them their housing, and sold them their provisions. Ford City was a complete company town until 1895 when other commerce was allowed in and lots and houses were sold to anyone who wished to settle.
The map from 1896 includes labeled streets, buildings and railroad route. An inscription banner states: Ford City was founded by John B. Ford. The father of the plate glass industry in America.
