Historic Map - Fort Collins, CO - 1899
Description
This bird’s-eye view print of Fort Collins, Colorado was drawn and published by Merritt D. Houghton in 1899. Fort Collins was founded as a haven for travelers along the Overland Trail in the 1860's to insure safe travel. The fort had no walls, but maintained as an important camping location for travelers heading west.
Fort Collins became the county seat of Larimer County when the county was formed in 1861. When the U. S. Army decommissioned the outpost in 1867, Fort Collins began attracting settlers with agricultural interests.
Stock growing and farming began to be practiced on a large scale. Wheat, oats, hay and vegetables could be easily raised in the region.
In 1872, an agricultural college was built at Fort Collins which is now called Colorado State University. The organized “Agricultural Colony” was begun that same year at Fort Collins. The organization changed the landscape of Fort Collins by sub-dividing 3,000 acres of land into 10, 20 and 40 acre lots and making them available for farming interests.
In the year of this map’s publishing the newly elected college president Barton Aylesworth was busy expanding the institution’s agricultural and horticultural interests.
The illustration includes streets, buildings and railroad route.
