Historic Map - Franklin, NH - 1884
Description
This bird’s-eye view print of Franklin, New Hampshire was drawn and published by Henry Wellge, Norris & Wellge in 1884. Franklin was settled in the 1760's at the headwaters of the Merrimack River. The Pemigewasset and Winnipesaukee rivers meet at that location to form the Merrimack.
Waterfalls along the rivers enabled Franklin to develop into a major mill town in the 1800's. The Winnipiseogee Paper Mill was built in the 1850's near the upper dam. Franklin Woolen Mills were erected in the 1860's along with the mills of A. W. Sulloway. In the 1870's, both mills converted to the manufacture of hosiery. Mr. Sulloway’s mill was producing three hundred dozens of men’s and boy’s socks per day, in the 1880's, employing around 100 workers.
The map includes labeled roads, buildings, waterways and railroad route. Featured is an inset illustration of Franklin Falls in 1856.
