Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Freeport, New York, drawn and published by Hughes & Bailey in 1909. The village of Freeport, in Nassau County, lies along the south shore of Long Island. The port town was an important oyster producing community following the Civil War. The Southside Railroad reached Freeport in the 1860's and the village prospered greatly because of it. Developer and landowner John J. Randall, who had gained notoriety through production of local canal systems, opposed the village's plan to grid out the town streets and so built a Victorian house and grounds right on a triangular lot at Lena Avenue and Wilson Place to spite the designers. The "Freeport Spite House" remains there today. By the late 1800's, Freeport was a popular resort town catering to New York's elite. Travelers would travel there by touring car using the one-lane Merrick Road. Beginning in 1902, the New York and Long Island Traction Corporation ran regular trolleys from Jamaica, Queens, Hempstead and Brooklyn to Freeport.
