This bird's-eye view map of Geneva, New York was published by Burleigh Litho. in 1893. Geneva is located at the north end of Seneca Lake in the Finger Lakes region of New York. The area was burned during the American Revolution's famous Sullivan Expedition, and the village lay abandoned until the late 1700's, when it was developed by the Pulteney Association. Farming was the chief industry in the community's early days and when the Erie Canal and the Cayuga-Seneca Canal opened Geneva emerged as an important agricultural source of fruits and vegetables.
When the railroad reached town in the 1840's new industries were established in the commercial district and the area became known as "the bottom lands". Wm B. Dunning began producing boilers and mill irons in Geneva in 1851. This firm would become the New York Central Iron Works Company in 1890. Edward W. Herendeen established the Thomas Harrow Company in 1868 making all sorts of agricultural equipment. At the time of this map's publishing Herendeen's production focused mainly on steam and hot water boilers and their popular Furman Heaters under the name Herendeen Manufacturing Company. The Geneva Malt House was established by Samuel K. Nester in 1871. The Geneva Preserving Company canned thousands of packages of fruits and vegetables in the north end of the village. The Patent Cereals Company of Geneva manufactured wheat and corn goods, providing food and brewery items. The state formed the New York Agricultural Experiment Station in Geneva in 1882. The station promoted agricultural interests through scientific investigations and experiments. Production of optical equipment, boilers and iron stoves were important to Geneva in 1893, but tourism was also key to the popularity of the village which offered fine hotels, great fishing and some nearby healthy mineral springs.
The panoramic map from 1893 features an inset view of Geneva, Ontario County from 1836. It portrays buildings, railroad route, harbor traffic and clearly labeled streets.
