View of Gettysburg, Adams County, P.A., 1888 / drawn & published by T. M. Fowler & A. E. Downs.

This aero-view print of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania was drawn by Thaddeus Mortimer Fowler and published by T. M. Fowler & A. E. Downs in 1888. Gettysburg was settled as a crossroads town with interests in trade in the late 1700's and named for local tavern owner Samuel Gettys. The Pennsylvania College was established here in 1832. A railroad between Gettysburg and Hanover was completed in 1858.

The borough is located near the famed battlefield of the American Civil War. By 1888, Gettysburg���s battlefield had 178 monuments dedicated to the fallen. There were 44 Pennsylvania, 35 New York, 28 Massachusetts, 20 Ohio, 12 New Jersey, 7 Connecticut, 7 Wisconsin, 6 Indiana, 4 Rhode Island, 4 Maine, 4 New Hampshire, 2 Delaware, and 5 general monuments in place. In August of 1888, a bronze statue of General George K. Warren, of General Meade���s staff, was unveiled on Little Round Top.
