Historic Map - Gorham, NH - 1888
Description
This hand-colored bird’s-eye view print of Gorham, New Hampshire was drawn and published by George E. Norris, Burleigh Lith. in 1888. Gorham was incorporated northeast of Mount Washington in 1836. It was little more than a logging community at the time.
In 1851, the St. Lawrence & Atlantic Railroad erected railroad repair facilities and yards at Gorham. Gorham prospered as a result of the railroad shops as well as the lumber mills along the Androscoggin River. The railroad, later known as the Grand Trunk Railway, opened up the area to tourism in the late 1800's. Visitors could then access the various scenic wonders of the region more easily.
The map includes labeled roads, buildings, waterways and railroad yards. There are colored illustrations of the following:
• Libby’s Mills.
• Peabody’s Mills.
• Twitchell’s Block & Masonic Hall.
• S. M. Leavitt.
