Description
Gouverneur, N.Y. Published & drawn by L. R. Burleigh. Beck & Pauli, litho.
Reproduction bird's-eye view map of Gouverneur, New York, drawn and published by Lucien R. Burleigh in 1885. Gouverneur is a town in St. Lawrence County along the Oswegatchie River. Named for statesman and landowner Gouverneur Morris, the town was settled in 1805. A farming community, well known for its production of cheese, Gouverneur became a world famous resource of talc when the valuable mineral was discovered near Natural Dam and Little Bow. Talc was also found in South Carolina and Pennsylvania, but the mineral discovered near Gouverneur was found to be of the finest balance of silica and magnesia, making it the highest quality available. Marble and zinc were also mined in the area.
The map from 1885 shows railway route and includes clearly labeled street names.
